Finish Perfection Starts in the Mold.
Advances in powder coating formulation and application have made in-mold powder coatings an attractive alternative for finishing FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic). This innovative and integrated process allows for the finishing of FRP material with powder coating in the interior of the mold in a single step.
The powder coating is applied to the inside of the mold, where it melts and gels. Meanwhile, the FRP material is positioned inside the mold before it is closed. The powder and substrate will cure at a low temperature, ranging from 130°C to 160°C, within 3 to 5 minutes. This process enables the coating to co-react with the FRP and/or molding compounds, ensuring a strong adhesion to the part. This guarantees that the powder coating film and substrate are effectively molded together.
Finishes created with in-mold coatings encompass high gloss, matte, textured, metallic, & wood grain options. Clonecoat can serve as a primer, a conductive primer, or a top coat. In-mold powder coatings provide a strong, attractive finish for reinforced plastics, with excellent adhesion, hardness, & chip resistance. This process protects SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) and prevents fiber blooming. It reduces finishing costs by lowering labor, rework, scrap, and environmental expenses.
